Broomfield History (13/10/09)

"THE BIRTH OF THE BLUES"
The Broomfield Club 1st Team was founded in 1911 by Messer LESLIE MORDLE & LEN DRAPER with its youthful players being drawn from the Palmers Green and Southgate area, at a time when Southgate was only an expanding village.
The Club's origins were depicted in the club badge with the ancient entrance gate to Southgate Village which stood for many years adjacent the 'Broomfield Estate' where grew in profusion the flowering Broom shrub whose foliage is also seen on the badge. The emblem of Middlesex County of course completed the badge at a time when people had huge loyalty to their county.
Although the team instantly made good progress by winning the Enfield League in its first season, it was forced to close down in 1914 when all of its players whose average age were only 18, enlisted in the forces following the outbreak of The Great War.

A BORN AGAIN BROOMS
In 1919 following the cessation of hostilities many Clubs went out of existence but as a result of tremendous efforts by ARTHUR THOMPSON the Club was reconstructed and joined the Wood Green League. With the ambition to progress as an amateur football club.

AN AMATEUR ETHOS
In 1926 under the guidance of then Club Secretary GEORGE HUGHES the Club became a founder member of the Nemean Amateur League and affiliated to The Amateur Football Alliance, a step it has never regretted and where today it remains as a member. For the next 11 years in spite of having several changes of ground, the Team enjoyed a good measure of success winning many competitions and earned a reputation as a major force within Nemean League and AFA Football.

BROOMS COME HOME
In the1920's Brooms acquired a private ground in Hedge Lane however in 1933 the ground was lost to building development in a fast growing Palmers Green. The Club was forced to become nomads for a short period playing at various venues including Walthamstow Avenue and Wood Green Town F C's. However in 1937 the club returned to its roots when the Southgate Borough Council granted the Club the tenancy of the newly constructed Hazelwood Sports Ground where they still play today.

BROOMS AT WAR
In 1939 with the outbreak of World War Two, all league and cup competition was suspended, however the Committee was asked to arrange certain special matches and events to help raise money for the Mayor's Southgate War Appeal Funds, one of which was for the purpose of a Spitfire.
Club stalwarts, HAROLD WHAYMAN and GEORGE FRENCH arranged a list of formidable 'All Star friendly fixtures' and a number of these matches where played at the team's new Hazelwood home with up to 2,000 spectators lining the pitch. Professionals guested for the Club including Joe Hulme of Arsenal and England fame who later finished his playing career with Brooms.

A GOLDEN ERA
In 1946 with the return of several of its men following the cessation of hostilities, the Club reformed to reconstruct its league activities and it was soon evident that Broomfield
Would be a strong contender for championship honors.
Although the prize did not come immediately, the 1st XI eventually secured the Neaman League Championship in Season 1950/51 and this heralded a run of success so far unprecedented in the Club's history.

A NEW H.Q.
In 1952 came a real breakthrough for the Club when through the determined efforts of the Committee, the Southgate Borough Council granted a lease to the Clubhouse, bowling green and Tennis Courts in Hedge Lane Palmers Green and following this came the formation of The Broomfield Club.

SAL HISTORY MADE
In 1958 now with its own Headquarters and thanks to tireless work of then Club Secretary BILL LAVERACK, the Club applied for membership of the SAL and was accepted. In the next three years culminating in the Club's 50yearJubilee in 1961, the 1st XI achieved the almost impossible feat of winning 3rd, 2nd and 1st Divisions of the SAL in consecutive seasons, which was an all time record that has never been equaled.

CLOUDY TIMES HAVE A SILVER LINING
For Brooms 1st X1 the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties where thirty years of hurt as far as winning trophies were concerned despite players of great talent passing through the Club, at one time the Team boasted no less than seven players in the SAL Representative Side. However it is said that from adversity sometimes springs an inner strength and so it has proved with a good number of players from this era now proving to be excellent administrators in today's well run Club. One very notable event did occur in this period. In 1986/87 season the club celebrated its 75yearJubilee and marked the event with a match against Ipswich Town F.C. who where former members of the SAL and with whom the Club had historic links having played and beaten "The Tractor Boys" 5-1 at Portman Road in the 1931 AFA Cup not long before they turned professional.

BROOMS SWEEP UP AGAIN
The 2000nds have seen another golden era for the 1st X1 with the achievements of winning the SAL 3rd Div Championship in 1999/2000 the 2nd Div Championship in 2000/2001,2008/2009 and the historic Double Season 2004/2005 when the 1st Div Championship and Middx/Essex AFA Senior Cup where brought home to Hedge Lane.

BROOMS TO SCORE A CENTURY
2011-2012 Season will see a hundred years of Broomfield 1st Team history a tremendous achievement, and great testament to all those who have participated in the Club's progress down the years.
