Andy Hill 20 October 1982 - 19 May 2011
23 May 2011

Ex-6th team player Andy Hill passed away on 19th May. Andy played for the club for a few seasons, mainly playing for the 6s but getting the occasional run out with the higher teams. Andy was one of the most versatile players I have ever played with. He always wanted to play up front, a position that came easy for him, but he never moaned or complained when we took advantage of his fitness and pace and played him usually at centre half. It is an understatement to say that Andy was super fit, with his love of mountain biking and other sports, which makes it all the more of a shock when I was told of his passing at such a young age. On and off the pitch Andy was easily one of the nicest blokes I've ever met and our thoughts go out to his wife and his family.

A celebration of Andy's life took place in St Albans on Thursday 26th May. The club was represented by current and ex players as well as Dave Chapman from the club committee. It was a tribute to Andy's popularity that there were so many friends from his days either playing cricket, football or mountain biking. We are hoping to arrange a pre season charity match in Andy's memory with invites going out to anyone that played with Andy in the 6th team.

Below is a message from his father, Roger Hill, who also played for the club;

"It is with great sadness that we write to let you know that our son, Andrew, lost his battle with cancer on 19th May. He died peacefully surrounded by his family and closest friends at the Garden House Hospice near his home in Letchworth.

Throughout his illness and chemotherapy he and his wonderful wife Sarah (Ses) showed immense courage and continued to live life to the full until a few weeks ago. Andrew, accompanied by his sister Sarah recently completed a half marathon raising over £5,000 between them for charities. Andrew also took part in several downhill mountain bike races and, with Ses, managed to buy and set up a beautiful first home together in Letchworth. All of these were completed with his usual cheery nature and broad smile.

It is heartening for us and the rest of our extended family to know just how much love and support Andrew gave to others in spite of his illness. His activities within the Vineyard Church also meant that he and Ses received many hours of support and love for which we will always be hugely grateful.

Andrew’s passing will leave a sadness in so many people’s hearts but also joyful memories of a much loved person of whom we will always be so proud.

Charitable donations are welcomed in memory of Andrew to Garden House Hospice, Gillison Close, Letchworth Garden City, Herts, SG6 1QU www.justgiving.com/gardenhousehospice/donate/.

Regards
Rog"
